The GOP's biggest problem is the perceived hostility toward minorities. They're going to have to overcome that problem, and it's going to take multiple election cycles to change that image.

Problem is that in the short term they have to hold their base together and that base includes the Angry White Man (TM).

I won't have any faith in the black community until they started voting the way most black folks I know claim to believe: conservatively.

The exodus of blacks from the GOP can be traced much further back than Goldwater. Warren Harding's shitty response to the Mississippi flood really damaged the image, and then Roosevelt made them a part of his coalition.

That's all true, but the Republican Party didn't become toxic to Blacks until the 1960's lest we forget that Ike carried the Black vote in 1956 and Nixon got 32% in 1960. Before FDR, Black folks were yellow-dog Republicans. During the FDR, Truman and Ike years, they voted similar to the rest of the nation. After Goldwater, they became yellow-dog Democrats.

EDIT: Before the Civil Rights Movement, White Southerners were more devoted to the Democratic than Black folks today. FDR got 99% of the vote in South Carolina and 87% in Mississippi.

Do you realize that when you make these overreaching, misleading statements it makes you look either spiteful or simple?

Regardless of his intentions for doing so, that will be a frequent talking point used against him by Dems.

Answer to the thread question is no.

So anybody that gets a considerable amount of the black vote is automatically not a conservative by virtue of that fact alone? LMAO

I agree Romney would have been perfect, but if he can't get as many votes as McLame, then he's finished.

It amazes me how often I see this misstatement of fact on this board.

Romney got a million more votes than McCain did.

There are some responses in this thread that is not helping Rand Paul at all in his outreach.

We all know how poorly off blacks have been under the democrat party and continuing to vote for them but reminding them of that in a harsh way will not get you anywhere. You catch more flies with honey, not vinegar.

Anyway, if Rand can get 10 to 17% of the black vote, he wins the general comfortably.

maybe with a Herman Cain as a running mate, don't see many black conservatives with the potential to help him though, maybe someone like Jennifer Carroll from FL as well. The Alan Wests and Alan Keyes are too big a lighting rod for the Jesse Jacksons and white liberals to attach their hate to.

The more moderate Rice's and Powells just don't inspire much from the independent and conservative base.

Of course the Rove Repubs will do whatever they can to destroy Rand and anyone who stands with him.

Death and more of the same D.C. stupidity is about the only thing we can count on.

"Airport Minority Contractors' Association "

Do you see the irony in pandering to a group of voters who self segregate and interests all revolve around race, such as the group above.
For Rand Paul to bring in a bloc of African Americans his message and ideology would be so watered down and compromised his base would seek other options.

Wasn't it Bobby Jindal who said you can't get people to vote for you by insulting them?

Link? Seriously, I would love to see the evidence to support this. If you can provide it, I will admit I was wrong.

I'm aware of that. But re: Rand Paul "bringing blacks back to the GOP," those in higher socio-economic categories would be much, much more likely to convert first. IMO.

Use google my friend. The fact that you were unaware of this goes a long way to explaining Angry White Guy syndrome. Were you also unaware of the fact that most of the folks on welfare are White?

Wow. So he's a plagiarist AND a history revisionist.

LINK

He's a perfect candidate!
quote:

PAUL: You had to ask me the "but." I don't like the idea of telling private business owners — I abhor racism. I think it’s a bad business decision to exclude anybody from your restaurant — but, at the same time, I do believe in private ownership. But I absolutely think there should be no discrimination in anything that gets any public funding, and that’s most of what I think the Civil Rights Act was about in my mind.

So in other words ... when Paul says "the Civil Rights Act" .... he's not talking about the actual Civil Rights Act (the one that regulates state and local government as well as private enterprise) - he's talking about the fake one in his head. WOW. NOW it all makes fricking sense!
