so had Texas won 3 of the last 5 national titles, you dont think that would be worth it to them?

ya kidding me?

I do know that UT has no problems putting butts in seats on Saturdays during the fall, regardless of how mediocre they've been as of late. And they have no problems raising money. I'm not understanding how paying Saban 9 figures would have made sound financial sense for UT.

Bama didn't have trouble either but look what Saban has build since. Plus UT seems to be on a down slide with A&M taking over Texas.

But Bama still sold out every single game before Saban, so that's not where the biggest difference is.

That's what I was thinking. But I didn't consider the endorsements and TV revenue.

I also didn't know about the increases in enrollment. It sounds ridiculous that thousands of people would choose where to go to college based on the football team, but apparently this is a thing based on a quick google search.

So, I was admittedly wrong. Sounds like he would be worth it provided he stays long enough and wins (which shouldn't be hard to do in Texas).

ETA: if this is true, it makes you wonder how Bama was able to get away with paying him $7 mill a year.

Well...in fairness, would he have won three titles in five years had he gone?

I wouldn't bet against him, but it's not like that is a lock. He'd build some great teams, but what he's done at Bama isn't exactly normal.

That's definitely a big part of it. Rich Yankees from the suburbs who just think it would be cool to live the southern/SEC big school experience.

But another part of is just keeping Alabama in the consciousness. For example Alabama's got a great law school and the best wheelchair basketball program in the country. But for a pre-law student or wheelchair basketball player from say, Ohio, Alabama would never even occur to them as an option. Now it does.

Yep, Finebaum was a great reporter in Birmingham.

I hated Finebaum when Meyer was at UF.

Turns out, Finebaum was right on about Meyer...

Every Bama fan hated Finebaum until Saban arrived. Because he was right about DuBose, Fran, Price, Shula...

It's so funny know that people say he's a Gump. Dude went to UT, and build his career mostly trashing Alabama.

Nick Saban is the best coach/recruiter combo maybe in the history of CFB. If Texas would have hired him, they would have won at least 3, IMO, national titles during his tenure. If you offered 3 guranteed NT to Alleva for 100 mil, I'd hope like hell that he'd sprint to the bank.

Look at the talent hes been able to pull and successfully utilize at Bama. And although it may not be by much Texas>Bama when it comes to recruits ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL. Honestly, the 2 schools that Saban would have more success at over Bama, would probably be Texas and USC. And we all know the path to the title would be easier at those schools than Bama/LSU.

You can't just predict multiple championships like that. I don't think you respect how difficult it is to win ONE. The amount of resiliency and cohesion and consistency and pure dumb luck that it takes. All that is more important than athleticism. We look back now and say Bama won 3 championships in 4 years, they were great and dominant. Every one of those 3 was by a razor margin. Virtually every national championship, if you look at the team's entire season, is by a narrow margin. And if we had a time machine and went back and did 09-12 again, Bama probably wouldn't win 3 championships.

That's the weird thing about college football. There's so many variables and so many teams that even though there's a champion every year, it's still highly unlikely on a year-to-year basis for individual teams.

Let me put it very simply. I don't think there's a single team that is likely to win the championship next year. Even though I would consider FSU the "favorite" I'd give them less than a 10% chance. A myriad other teams have a 1% or 2% or 3% chance, and so on. (Of course, a lot of teams have a 0% chance). No one is "likely" to win the championship.

Theres a lot of things you cant predict. Hell, sports writers predict championships like that every year. Saban will always have the best talent. The talent gap against his opponents would be bigger at Texas. I think hes as close to a sure thing program fixer that has ever existed.

According to the SECr, Bama is on the decline because he's "lost it"

If they were going to pay him $100 million, then he is worth $100 million.
