The core of Loki's staff is the Mind Stone which is one of the Infinity Stones that the Collector is looking to acquire. It's extremely powerful and is how Loki was able to turn people into his zombi drones. It's also what was causing everyone to get so angry and argue when they were on the helicarrier.

Do you not remember when an agitated Banner picked up the staff and didn't even realize it? Once he was away from the the thing he was able to regain control. The little man that talks to him in the demolished abandoned factory lets us know this b/c he says Banner aimed his landing.

That wasn't for convenience. It was to set up just how screwed everyone is when all the stones are together.

On a smaller level it also helped to let those who hadn't seen Incredible Hulk know that he has more control when its a willed change vs forced.
