When Shin Dong-hyuk caught wind of his mother's plan to escape the notorious North Korean death camp, camp 14, he did what any loyal citizen would do: told the prison guards.
The guards promptly rounded up his mother and brother - hanged the former and shot the latter in the head right in front of him.
Even after being witness to such atrocities, Shin was so brainwashed that he believed he was doing the right thing.
He was soon rewarded for his loyalty when the guards escorted him to a small dark room and proceeded to torture him for 4 days in-order to extract more information they believed he was withholding.
"I was taken to a room full of torture instruments," he says.
"I was stripped naked, my legs were cuffed and hands were tied with rope. I was hung by my hands and legs from the ceiling".
"A charcoal fire was started and placed under my back I could feel the intense heat around my waist and shrieked."
"My torturers pierced me with a steel hook near the groin to stop me from writhing. The pain was so bad that I passed out."
Daily life consisted of: getting up at the crack of dawn, working all day, and eating a strange concoction of cabbage and cornmeal.
"The gnawing pain of hunger was commonplace, and the guards would always tell us 'through hunger you will repent'."
In-order to survive, many prisoners scavenged the camp for rats and roaches.
The brutally-cold winter months brought added misery to an already dire situation.
Prisoners were clothed in the barest of essentials, as a result, many lost fingers and toes to frostbite.
Even school was no safe-haven, teachers would beat the students to death for breaking the most minor of rules.
Once while working in the factory, Shin accidentally broke the sewing machine.
As punishment, the tip of his finger was chopped off.

Yeah, but Republicans want to take away your birth control pills.
That is a much bigger problem.
That is a much bigger problem.

So like we supposedly feel so horrible about the Holocaust, but it sure seems like it's happening again to me.

Sadly, every time I hear of someone escaping from North Korea I wonder how many of their relatives were executed in return.

If this is the kid from the 2012 60-Minutes piece, he snitched on his entire family and got them executed before he escaped.

That is oh so old, but can't be told enough times. They refuse to believe it, but liberal foot soldiers are trying to lead us directly to this terrible place.

Look at nazi Germany.
Brainwashing is not some sci fi bullshite. It is real. This kid was born in a prison with zero concept of normalcy as we understand it.

You do realize he was BORN in that prison camp, right? He was probably lied to from the minute he was born. He was probably told to report anyone attempting to escape, no matter who they were. Brainwashing is serious shite.

That is the god damn truth, and anybody that denies it is ignorant.

I understand your sentiment, but you're wrong. As others have said already, North Korea brainwashes their citizens. Here's a personal testimony by a North Korean defector on the subject of brainwashing. LINK
quote:
Once in Mongolia, we were protected and some soldiers contacted South Korea where we were accepted as refugees. This whole time, I was still so brainwashed that I thought Kim Jong-il could read my mind from afar. Even though I had escaped, I wouldn't let myself think anything negative about the regime.
When we arrived in South Korea they took us to an Education Centre for several months. I learned that Kim Jong-il was a dictator, but I was still confused when I left – it wasn't enough time to fully change my mind.
After I came out of the centre, I met new people, started to study using the internet, and read lots of books. I found out about socialism, communism and capitalism. I learned new things and finally saw the truth.
I realised that everything I thought was a lie. I had not been a real person – I was created for the regime to work for them. If they ordered us to die, I would've died for them. I wasn't a human – I was something else. I certainly wasn't treated like one. I knew nothing of freedom. It took about three years to fully get over the brainwashing.
My mother took longer than me. When Kim Jong-il died she couldn't believe it. We were in South Korea by then and she said, "he can't die because he's not a human, he's a god!" It was very hard for us to comprehend that he was just a human, but I helped my mother see the truth.
