agree and disagree, I think it somewhat cheapens the experience, but

-The ability to ff through dull filler episodes or particular side plots you don't give a shite about.
-You avoid the frustration of dragged out plots because its not waiting weeks upon weeks to advance.
-Bingeing also gives you the ability to get into series' you're late to the party on like I was with Breaking Bad

I love it because I rarely get to watch tv episodes when they air. Once I get behind on starting a typical non-sitcom (i.e. a show where you have to watch the episodes in order), it used to be impossible to ever catch up, so I had to just write off the series entirely (i.e. The Wire, The Sopranos, Lost, 24 (when it first aired), Mad Men, ect). Now, I can go back and watch these series in order on my schedule. It's a huge help.

I think there are problems of diffusion of choice. You used to wait and pay to see a movie, any movie really. Now I have every movie ever made, instantly in Blu-Ray. So many great movies I've never seen. Too hard to decide. Think I'll just watch Seinfeld reruns.

Same sort of issues of overexposure, basically getting spoiled. It can be combated and amended by taking charge of your viewing habits, planning and deciding. Make a list of what you want to see. Only want to watch an episode once a week, and spend a week talking about it? Then just fricking do that.

TV/movies were always a mostly passive experiences. Aside from a decision to buy a ticket, you just watched whatever was available to you. The availability has changed, but our habits haven't caught up. We should now approach movies/tv the way we do literature, be proactive and discerning in our habits.

I think some of it's a generational thing. Younger people don't watch TV the way I do & I don't like binge watching.

I've bought a few seasons of programs that I like, but I haven't finished them. Just stopped watching Deadwood even though I love hearing people call each other cock suckers. Had Netflix for two years & never watched anything but movies & documentaries.

Would rather view an old program by catching it in syndication. That's how I saw Cheers, Friends, Fraiser, etc.

Breaking Bad & Justified are the only two shows I have watched week-to-week in the last five years.

You are saying it is generational yet you watch almost no tv the way you used to.

I grew up on 4 tv channels. I love marathoning shows.

Maybe I'm just lazy & undisciplined. Maybe I want to be surprised.
I enjoy going through the cable guide to see what movies, ballgames, etc. are showing day to day.

Over the last 5 years, the only shows I've watched week to week were: "Game of Thrones" (often had to marathon because my parents have HBO, but I don't), Friday Night Lights (ended), Chuck (ended and missed the last season), Psych (missed half of the last season), Community (had to marathon almost all of the last season because I could never catch it live), Outsourced (ended), Face/Off, and Saturday Night Live (often opt to skip it).

Netflix and DVR has definitely changed the way I watch TV. Before, I might be more likely to try out new shows if nothing else was on TV at the time. Now I only watch shows I'm interested in. The flip side of that is being able to see what you want without being tied to a timeslot.
