All this looks terrible and if this is about saving money and that's it, this is a kink in the FO armour.

Ridiculous.

legally the astros cannot show their cards (medical reports in question) due to HIPPA rules.

I don't think its about saving money per se…if things workout for them they will end up spending roughly the same amount as if they just signed Aiken for slot. I think they are trying to manipulate the system to get more for their total spend. the wrinkle here vs what they did in 2012 was there is a questionable injury involved that seemingly nobody aside from the astros team doctor feels is valid.

That's an excellent, in-depth breakdown of it. I don't see how the Astros can be faulted to looking to lessen this unforeseen risk when they could just fall back on the #2 pick next year.

So he isn't injured per Se but has an extra small ligament?

He can be construed as a a significant injury risk, but it's rare enough of an issue for a pitcher to be very unclear.

In my opinion, this does not bode well for this draft.

The fact that the Astros reduced their offer to a reported $5mil suggest they have evidence of an injury. MLB will not allow the Astros the compensation pick next year simply on their "we think he is hurt" words - they will have to show evidence. So I feel pretty certain that they will be justified in their actions.

However, if the astros don't sign Aiken, they don't get that pool money to spread to nix and Marshall. So I'm not sure if they sign anyone. Maybe Nix, if he is willing to sign for a little below slot.

The report that the astros have reduced the offer to the minimal needed to gain the compensation pick next draft suggest to me a last ditch effort to scare Aiken's camp. Hopefully the astros really haven't thrown in the towel and are hoping he comes back with the "awww, ok guys, I'll take the 5 milly".

But right now, I don't think we get him.

This guy has a good point
quote:

? I said it on last night's thread.
Aiken’s camp has leaked everything. They have not given the Astros permission to state their medical concerns because they might lose their public relation’s advantage. Rosenthal’s comments about Close being a class guy rings hollow because Close is putting everything out on the Closeline he can to sway public opinion. As I said earlier, the entourage is panicking because the cash cow is not producing enough milk to feed all the ravenous calves. Everybody on Aiken’s side is acting like a high schooler’s parent. Oh, that’s right, they are.
If you think that the Astros are messing with your baby to save money, why don’t you sign that form that lets the Astros state their case and let’s see what they have and let’s see what’s fair and what’s not fair.

The only thing, I believe the medical consent form that Aiken and his parents had to sign prior to the physical includes standard verbiage on who they can share to results with.

From someone I know who was at one time in the minors, the clause allows the team to "disclose the results to anyone necessary to benefit interpretation of said results". ... Or some BS like that.

I guarantee you MLB has them. The fact that they aren't stepping in and taking action suggests that the astros are not doing anything terrible.

Luhnow isn't a dummy. He may game the system, but he won't tarnish his reputation he earned in St Louis. Plus, the astros team doctor could find himself in hot water if he purposely miss-diagnoses a patient.

Mark barman of the Houston news station spoke with Mac Marshall tonight and he was quoted as saying "it all depends on Brady right now"...He also said as far as his possibility of signing with the Astros "it has always been like if the money is there"...meaning the Astros have told him if they have the available slot money they will give him his number.

Dirty play or not... If luhnow somehow gets all 3 guys from the championship 18 and under USA team. I will buy him beers every time I see him.

That's not drafting well... It is wizardry.

Eta: one of my friends here in Taiwan watched Aiken pitch here last year. Said he is an absolute stud.

I really hope they can bump Aiken up to around 4-5 million and get Mac and Nix taken care of. With Appel struggling, we could use the reinforcement arms in the farm.

If they don't sign him it will not be pretty at all for the organization the owner and the GM. Regardless of the risk this will hurt the franchise big time. Lunhows credibility is already iffy with appel falling on his face.

The astros have at least 30 other players on the Minors' rosters who have played shitty in their first year. I guess they need to shitcan all those guys.

I know we don't see eye to eye often. But I'm just going to put this as bluntly and simple-minded as I can in hopes something I say here sticks:

You are a fricking MORON if you think Luhnow blew it when he drafted Appel. They guy was 1:1 on almost everyone's board not one, but TWO drafts in a row. That is not a player you pass on. Does it suck that Appel is stinking this year despite he was a college player, absolutely. Is that Luhnow's fault? No way.

fricking use a brain cell already.

Eta: And this post might be influenced because I'm pissed that they took the bat out of Altuve's hands after only one AB.

Calm down. Nothing to get that upset over. His job is take the player that becomes very successful. Doesn't matter where others had him rated. If he was that great he would have taken him the year before.

I'm always in favor of the top bat over top arm that high. Still hope appel can pull it together but so far there is zero evidence of it.
