they are idiots. I love LSU but would rather the Astros sign him. if he was a football player it would be a different story.

Anyone see that abomination of a homerun derby? Springer should've been in it, he would've beheaded all other participants

I was thinking the same thing.

Springer could have dominated that thing

In a world where CC Sabathia and Bartolo Colon become mega-rich and successful stars, it is beyond stupid to hurt your elite pitching arm doing fricking CrossFit.

no doubt. seems like the astros would know before the draft that he was a CF freak.

Springer would've been very entertaining just to watch him, his energy and attitude would've been great there, where half of the participants didn't seem to care.

Plus even he had seven strait outs they would've been the most violent swings ever

I think he would have hit 15 bombs and whiffed 6 times.

I guess that information wasn't part of Luhnow's advanced metrics.

Someone asked Springer about the home run derby and he said they're really not his thing. He said he's done them before and hasn't done real well.

Last night's derby was so damn boring. Since they've dropped the requirement of having to be an all star I wish they would just go ahead and give the finger to mindset of picking the guys with the most homeruns. Most home runs doesn't necessarily mean the best derby participant. I mean shite, I'd want to see Carter go nuts in a derby. Dude doesn't hit worth a shite but when he connects with one, its such a powerful but effortless swing. Just sign up the freaks that are known to put on shows during BP.

The Ken Rosenthal article I just read paints the Astros in a very negative light. Aiken's agent is not pleased.

LINK

quote:

Casey Close represents Derek Jeter, Clayton Kershaw and a number of other baseball stars. Close is considered one of the most respected and discreet agents in baseball, and rarely if ever comments on ongoing contract negotiations.

But with a Friday deadline nearing for the Astros to sign high school left-hander Brady Aiken, the first overall pick in the 2014 draft, Close on Monday sharply criticized both the Astros and Major League Baseball for the way the team has handled negotiations with the pitcher.

quote:

“Brady has been seen by some of the most experienced and respected orthopedic arm specialists in the country, and all of those doctors have acknowledged that he’s not injured and that he’s ready to start his professional career,” Close said.

In regards to Nix:

quote:

Close and the union are particularly upset that the Astros have tied the signing of Aiken to the signing of Nix, who remains in limbo despite passing his physical.

quote:

“We believe that it is a clear violation of the rules being attempted solely to avoid penalty,” Clark said. “The Astros made a deal with Jacob Nix and should honor that agreement.”

quote:

Close said that if every team behaved like the Astros, then the entire structure of the draft would collapse.

If every player was contingent on another player, we would have no draft, we would have no draft pool, we would have no signings,” Close said. “We’d never be able to reach agreements. They’d either all be reached at the same time, or none of them would ever be reached.”

Forgive me if this has been covered to death. I don't follow all the DATs and thought it was interesting.

As a Houston native and LSU alumni, I want the opposite. Marshall could always end up back in Houston, but he could never end up back in Baton Rouge. This whole Aiken deal is just odd. I think Luhnow is trying his best to sign all 3 they drafted. But, as you all know, it is tied to Aiken taking a low ball offer, and I do not know if he will go that low. I do not doubt that Aiken has some sort of injury, but the extent of it and if it really drops his value that much (to only $3.4 mill signing bonus) is what I question. It will be a pissing match until Friday then all hell will probably break loose.

Oh and apparently Aiken just had a bad crossfit trainer. My trainer has 3000 certs in everything imaginable and wont let me get hurt...

well the only participants with more HRs than Springer and Carter were, Stanton, tulowitzki, & Donaldson . None of the big hr guys this year were in it other than Stanton

Yeah, I wasnt overly nervous a few weeks back when the Nix agreement was announced, but now I am going to be sweating this out haha Sounding more and more like the Stros are hell bent on giving Aiken a low ball offer ($3.1-$4 mill), and they will either sign all 3 or none of them. I just find it funny that Nix sounds content with taking the $1.5 mill, when Marshall would get $2 mill haha it will be interesting to see if they do haul all 3 and exactly how the money breaks down.

I would be happy if Houston is able to sign all three but this is a dangerous game Lumjow is playing and he's also risking the teams reputation as these things become more and more public. Even if they sign all three the union and agent community won't be liking it too much

I agree on the risk of this game. I would be happy if they just paid Aiken and signed Nix. Mac is a good prospect but Luhnow is taking a big gamble. More on reputation than anything else.
