Living in the area myself, I can tell you why the Sounders are popular. It's very simple:

The Mariners suck.

The Seahawks haven't started playing yet.

The Supersonics left and are now the Oklahoma City Thunder.

In this area, here's the popularity of the local teams:

1. Seahawks
2. Huskies
3. Sounders
4. Mariners

Since 1 and 2 haven't started playing yet...

huh? the sounders were packing the place last year during the overlap with the NFL.

Baseball has been doing well in the TV contract dept...

They have been, but I'd be interested to see how that develops over time. Are the contracts going to be as lucrative down the road upon renewal as ratings dip for events like the World Series?

Baseball is making money hand over fist, which is the reason that their stars make more money than any other team sport, and their mid-level players make A TON more than any other team sport.

True, but part of that is due to the fact that baseball has the most powerful players union in the world.

Guys like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers should be making over $40 million a year in their respective leagues, but they've been hamstrung by poor unions and CBAs.

No one is arguing that world series ratings have plummeted recently. You seem to be focusing on that sole point as to why MLB will suffer longterm when there are numerous other points (that I and most others would argue have more value) that say MLB is doing fine and actually better than most think.

MLB has "suffered" from the national perspective bc it lacks icons that people can associate with. Players like Bonds, Pedro, Jeter, Clemens, McGuire/Sosa, Griffey etc etc were exciting to watch and captured the national audience. MLB doesn't have that right now... take Cabrera for example, he is incredible yet really doesn't have that national appeal that the above players had. I think Trout, Bryce Harper and a couple others can potentially get there tho.

The NBA has benefited on the national side from players like Lebron who transcend the game and naturally create story lines. Yes they will have higher finals ratings when Lebron is in it but other than that I don't see how the NBA is doing better than MLB at anything.

I think the NFL is doomed by concussions. I can't see how the league will exist in 30 years unless it drastically alters the game.

decrease in popularity and ratings for baseball

On national networks this is true.

On regional networks ratings are as high as they have ever been for the most part.

Baseball is not dying. Far from it.

I'd say that the ratings being in the toilet for the World Series for almost a decade is hardly some skewed statistic or false equivalency.

Last years NBA Finals ratings 9.3
Last years World Series ratings 8.9

Maybe I'm missing missing something here, I dunno

Year before ratings were horrible, but prior year a 9.9 rating, year before that a 8.4, and a 11.4 the year before that

It's really not that much of an issue. Nowhere near what it is in football.

And how the hell do you figure anyone is trying to hide it?

Like I and others have stated, there are countless other statistics that point to the sport being on the rise and far from a decline.

I guess it is ironic that NFL fans gloss over the fact that in game attendance is "in the toilet" yet harp on world series ratings for baseball.

As you might expect, most (50-80%) soccer injuries affect the feet and legs. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that the contact that occurs while playing soccer is at the same level as during boxing, football, ice hockey, lacrosse, rodeo and wrestling and field hockey.
Head injuries account for between 4% and 22% of all soccer injuries. Can this contact cause brain damage? Let's look at the data.

quote:

A concussion may occur when someone's head strikes an object. A person with a concussion may lose consciousness or suffer memory loss and appear confused. In soccer, concussions make up 2-3% of all injuries. This is the same rate as for American football!

OK. Concussions are only part of it. I have to believe that football is A LOT more likely to cause long term brain damage due to the simple fact that nearly everyone on the field is slamming heads every play.

I still don't know what anyone is trying to hide, though.

I don't think people are trying to hide it. I just don't think FIFA really cares.

I agree. Some guy on the last page said this will be a huge problem in soccer and that's why everyone is trying to hide it.

They still do, but they don't have to COMPETE with the Seahawks or Huskies.

Tell me how often you hear SOUNDERS talk on AM 710.

"it's really not that much of an issue"

The sport of soccer wants to keep people such as yourself uninformed. You don't think the correct info regarding head injuries in soccer won't affect a fair amount of soccer moms? Remember, many have been pushing the idea that more moms will be pushing their kids to soccer instead of football because of that issue. Uh...........

Such as myself? A person that plays 3x a week and has been playing for 20 years? What is "soccer" keeping from me all these years? I've broken my leg and my foot playing but never had a concussion. I know people who have but there is no conspiracy here. Its a very dangerous sport and everyone knows that.

I see them both doing very well as the NFL is being destroyed by more player safety issues and Roger Goodell's endless need to tinker.

concussions are part of it but it will mostly be fueled by how horrible playing football is for your body overall, especially with how big and fast players have become these days.

Hell, it wasn't that long ago that a 300 pound offensive lineman was a rarity. Now you are considered undersized if you cant make that weight.
