Messi didn't score as many goals as one would expect but his presence on the field completely altered how teams tried to defend.

I still think the Golden Glove should go to Tim Howard though. Sure, Neuer had a number of clean sheets but he had better players in front of him.

Zidane really wasn't great before the Quarterfinals in 2006.

To be honest, Ochoa deserves it more than Howard.

Howard plays for USA. Ochoa plays for Mexico. When did you start hating America?

Doesn't matter. Messi and James Rodriquez were the only options IMO. Muller was fantastic, but he was playing with 10 other superstars on the field with him and about 5 more on the bench. Messi and James carried their teams out of the group stage and Messi drug Argentina all the way to the finals without any offensive help. It was well deserved.

He wasn't better than Messi, but he does deserve to be considered because he was a rock for Argentina. Still not more deserving than Messi for the award IMO

James certainly didn't carry Colombia in the group stage. He may have been their best player, but they weren't wholly dependent on him. Not to say he wasn't great.

You are right. He probably was top 5.

But James, Muller and Robben would be easily ahead on my ballot.

Interesting side note...the votes had to be in by halftime of the Final.

He pretty much carried his team single handedly through pool play.

So he played well against Nigeria, Iran and Bosnia. Is that worth the Golden Ball?

James scored in every game.

It's a travesty that James didn't win it.

1) James
2) Robben
3) Müller
4) Mascherano
5) Neymar/Messi/Neuer

Without Mascherano, Argentina wouldn't have sniffed the finals IMO

This kinda shows the award doesn't mean shite. It's just a popularity contest. FIFA is clueless.

Probably right, but he still wasn't better than Messi. He stood out because he ran his balls off and surprised some people, but he wasn't better than Messi. Just because Messi wasn't his usual Barcelona best, he was still great.

That said, Messi didn't deserve it. James did.

I think Mascherano was better. Messi is amazing but Mascherano was incredible, he honestly carried that team for 240 straight minutes, at least.

Yeah, it's debatable. No one loves Tommy Fußball more than me. I think Robben might have been just a little better, which isn't a slight to anyone. We saw some amazing performances.

Agreed. Not a lot of players out there versatile enough to play CB for Barca and then move to the midfield for an Argentina World Cup finals run.

Yeah, we were one torn anus away from seeing Robben score the winner in the semis. Mascherano was incredible and probably Argentina's best player in the last few matches.

And that's not a dig at Messi - Mascherano was just that fricking good.
