So if an attacker comes at you with a knife and you make a poor shot and hit him in the arm, but he drops, would you finish just him off?
You shoot to eliminate the threat. Not kill. If he happens to die because you shot him, oh well. But taking someone's life may not always be necessary.

As cruel as it sounds I was once even told by an officer in Livingston to "leave no witness" (kill an intruder). They can come back to sue you and in some cases, the injured robber wins the lawsuit. Even if they dont ein the litigation, you are out of thousands of dollars attempting to save your arse in court.
