It ebbs and flows. Its kind of like a see saw with one or the other enjoying surges of popularity.

Back in the early 70's when I started reading I became a Marvel fan and I think the main reason was those ole Marvel cartoons with the great theme songs. Though to be honest when I first started I did give several DC comics a try but they totally left me flat.

Now people who grew up with Superfriends probably gravitated to DC. People who grew up with the X-men cartoons probably went to Marvel.

There is such a synergy between the comics, the cartoons and the movies that I think the landscape of who's on top is always changing.
