I've said this twice now, but I think the simplicity of the experience, the bare boned intensity, is really hard for some people to digest. I think, as much as I like film makers like Nolan, there's a bend towards complexity for complexity's sake. That films MUST have layers upon layers upon layers. Red herrings. Morals in shades of grey, complex characters on twisting journeys, etc. People like to be Lost, pun intended, instead of just being shown the way. Maybe it's a little jadedness, maybe not, but people seem to expect the unexpected, in a bad way. SO when a movie gives you exactly what you expect, lays everything out on the table and doesn't try to surprise you with narrative backflips, backlash ensues.
