No one said he was THE villain, but he is a villain. He knows the identity of the killer, but chooses to play a twisted game with the FBI instead of just spilling the beans.

Screw your rules.

While there have been better villains overall, Philip Seymour Hoffman was a great villain in MI3.

He's far too good for the list.

Very vanilla list.

What about Frank Booth, Alex DeLarge, Jaws, Nurse Ratched,
Michael Myers, etc?

Goeth, Schindler's List, hands down as his character is based off of true events not just movie fiction

In addition to yours, what about the Predator, Alien, Terminator, at least for the first film of each franchise?

Bill the Butcher? Mr. Potter? The Wicked Witch of the West?

In the context of the film, I agree with you. But who do people remember the most from that movie? Buffalo Bill or Hannibal Lector?

Lector is the anti hero of that flick.

Where is he who must not be named? I'd be willing to bet that 10 years from now Voldemort will feature prominently on this list. The audience for the Harry Potter films needs to grow up.

While influential with the children of that era, I do not believe it will have nearly the impact the others have.

Here's the afi list. Nurse Ratched came in 5th. The shark in Jaws was 18th. Interesting that the top hero is Atticus Finch, but I dig it.

AFI Heroes and Villains.

edit - and the Terminator made both lists.

Easy...list to rate cinematic-wise and lasting cultural legacy...

1. Hannibal Lector, The Silence of the Lambs
2. Norman Bates, Psycho
3. Darth Vader, Star Wars Trilogy
4. The Joker, The Dark Knight
5. Amon Goeth, Schindler's List
6. Anton Chigurh, No Country For Old Men

Voldemort isn't even the best villain in his own series. Bellatrix and Umbridge are much worse than he is. Sure Voldemort is the main antagonist, but these two are into much sicker shite than he is.

Umbridge I'd say is the most classic villain in Harry Potter, not Voldemort. Just wish we got to see her at the Battle of Hogwarts and raped and killed by centaurs.

I remember both, Ted Levine's acting was amazing for that film. As well as Foster. Hopkins didn't make that movie, he polished it though and was off the charts.

How could anyone forget that scene.

Is Umbridge worse in the books? What other sick shite is she into besides child torture?

And yeah, I figured the centaur scene had been cleaned up for kids.

I always took his take on the character as a serial killing Jim Morrison or Robert Plant - at least in that scene.

That picture emphasizes that vibe.

A great actor, unfortunately typecast.

Great trivia (okay, great to me) from Silence of the Lambs - Scott Glenn played Alan Shepard in The Right Stuff - Ted Levine played Alan Shepard in HBO's From the Earth to the Moon.

She was a ringleader in genocide in wiping out Muggle Borns, plus just sicking a Dementor on Harry that would give him a fate worse than death when she had never met him. Voldemort never tried anything that bad on Harry. Voldemort was effective and just did what he thought was the most effective way to eliminate his competition (Goblet of Fire duel aside), but Bellatrix and Umbridge were true sadistic people who very much enjoyed seeing their prey suffer and poked them as much as possible. Umbridge was a much more effective villain than Voldemort. Did you ever have an absolute loathing of Voldemort? I didn't, but I hated Umbridge entirely, and think she's one of the all time great female literature villains. She's simply horrible in every sense of the word, while I at least understand why Voldemort does what he does.

Voldemort is a better villain in the books; he's pretty underwhelming on screen.
