seville is fricking awesome and some cheap places to stay too. i stayed here. i'm not a fan of hostels, but that was a very nice hotel. biggest room i had out of any hotel i stayed at in europe, free breakfast, great location. the alcazar is fantastic, the sevilla cathedral/giralda tower is magnificent, and the plaza de espana is beautiful. cheap tapas (el rinconcillo was my personal favorite), cheap wine/tinto de verano, cheap super freezing cruzcampo

He is in college and will be pretty much on his own for the second half of the trip, so I would guess a hostel may be an option.
Yeah, my parents said their favorite city is Seville. I definitely have to make there some day. My top city is Kyoto.
