Gemino curse is not like the leprachaun gold. It can take years or longer to reveal the fake unless you use something to detect it. Pretty much what Snape used to make a double of Gryffindor's sword. There was a story about it on Pottermore too. It does more than just prevent thieves, that's just the way it is used in Gringotts. Goblins can clearly detect it though since the sword was found out immediately by Griphook. It fooled wizards though.
