I hate to say it, but you need to move on and forget about the ring. There is no way you will find it if what he is saying is true. Why would they throw jewelry into a canal unless they were being chased by a cop. I would think they would have tried selling it to a pawn shop or something like that. Have you tried looking around at any of the pawn shops?

To the OP, as long as you let them hold you hostage over this material item, they are robbing you of space in your mind. They aren't worth it- let it go.
