It didn't. It also didn't win the Republicans the Hispanic vote, which pie in the sky Republicans think will happen if the Republicans get on board for amnesty this time.

I want them to simply state that amnesty is not happening and current immigration laws will be rigorously enforced. The amount of illegal immigrants will then decrease.
And I want a billion dollar raise tomorrow.

Not if you take a realistic approach to each situation....and if we could just stop all the fear mongering.

It's hard to take seriously someone who can't spell a common word like border. LSU engineering grads should stick to their slide rules and leave weightier matters to their intellectual betters.

This situation is predictable. People don't believe that illegal immigrants will just stop coming or that those not already here won't rush to get here, do they?

You honestly believe that would result in a fix? Trust me it wouldn't. We've already seen a somewhat smaller scale of what is going to happen.
The minute news agencies begin reporting that amnesty is likely to be passed, the border will be FLOODED with people. If you think what is happening now is bad, brother it will get many times worse.
Once amnesty is passed, the inflow of immigrants will continue to be quite heavy for a while afterwards. These individuals will continue to flood the border with the hopes that they too will get amnesty and the entire cycle will simply repeat itself.
It's a self-perpetuating issue.
You can bookmark this if you like and I will also place any monetary bet on my prediction if you are also interested, or if you are so certain that it will simply "pop the zit," as you say.
Yep.
Under the only circumstances we can have an open border is if there is no welfare state and entitlements are strictly, strictly, controlled and regulated. Socialism and open borders don't mix. I've never understood how we have such a liberal immigration policy compared to the rest of the world.
Most of Europe is socialistic and they understand that they cannot have open borders as it does not mix at all. To attempt to do so is to destroy your country.

Border...B-O-R-D-E-R...Border.

You folks grabbed the headline but didn't pay attention to the rest of the article. SOUTHCOM wants more money. They want the money for their HAP efforts and for FMS program. That funding means the commander can do things in country to help the population. They want the money, they'll use this to get more funding. Then you'll see the US building more police stations in these countries, building centers for these kids to live in, etc. I'm sure the SOUTHCOM Commander believes what he says but the result will be US dollars going to these countries. I'm not saying that is a bad idea, sometimes you do have to go to the root of the problem. But so many here have issues with spending money on illegal immigrants, well you'll see the money spent on them in a different way with this scenario.

Yeah no immigration problems in Europe....no ultra-right wing nationalist movements built on anti-immigrant fears. According to most on this board Europe is committing cultural suicide through immigration.

Immigration in Europe is a wholely different animal. I've come to the conclusion political correctness is an American affliction. My brother and I were smoking a cigarette outside of a bar in Turin, Italy as we watched a younger North African girl get refused service by the bouncer. She even tried giving money to people to get her a drink and bring it out on the patio- every single person refused. Bouncer basically told me they don't serve their kind there, and that they were the Mexicans of Italy.
Is that better?

Why didn't amnesty work in the 80s?
I read in an article the other day that Reagan agreed to amnesty on the basis that a fence be built to stem the illegal immigration flow.
We're still waiting on the fence.

Bingo.

That's right Wolfhound, Mexico is not under SOUTHCOM, however, the Central American countries are. Those countries that the latest border controversy involves. Thus my suggestion as to what the rest of the article stated and its importance. It isn't the headline.

Just trying to keep this issue properly framed. It is a second order effect they are attempting to achieve. Start with Guatemala and Belize if you truly believe it will make an impact. However, we have been doing these types of missions for my entire military career (over thirty years). Simply pouring money into a corrupt society (e.g. Afghanistan or Central America) is not going to produce the desired outcome. They feed off of graft like that.

Yes it has been going on forever. Heck the US has built more airstrips in Central America than the actual countries have. Not to mention police stations, docks, etc. all under specific programs. And it often ends up as graft. However, folks on this board constantly raise the issue of the costs to house and fed illegal immigrants--so just ship them back now. My point is that shipping them back is going to cost more than they think. And cost them in country. Personally I don't have a problem with using available programs to help staunch the problem at its root.
Posted on 7/7/14 at 9:54 am to wfeliciana
It would cost literally hundreds of billions less to fly them back to their own countries than it would to take care of them and their children and grandchildren for their entire lives.
