I found a border collie in a shelter and adopted her. Some farmer had a litter and gave them up. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Dogs can make life much more enjoyable.
I personally think border collies are the best breeds, but I am biased.

As the others mentioned, check out the local animal shelters bit one thing also to check out is the various rescues. Do a Google search on rescue centers and check them out. Often times you will find obedient and leash trained animals. The adoptions fees are higher but you can find a very nice dog. I'm a rottweiler fan and I checked out the southern states rescue and they got some nice ones. Check out the rescues and go from there.
