Go to your local pound--if it's of any size you'll find lots of adoption-worthy dogs. We fished a beautiful female Shepherd mix out of the Orlando pound a few years ago and she's an awesome hound. Plus the local pounds usually provide the necessary shots, operations, etc., for much less than a vet. And the people at the pound have some idea of the dog's background, temperament, etc.
