both of mine are from my local shelter and I actually volunteer and am on the board for the shelter too. We aren't a kill shelter and have no adoption fee, all dogs are spayed and neutered before they leave the shelter.
The big thing is finding a dog that is right for you. Go meet them and get them out of the kennel to see which fits your personality the best. Sounds dumb but if you don't want to go outside and walk or play with one, you don't need a hyperactive dog that requires a ton of exercise. If you want a dog just to hang around with, don't get a needy dog that needs a ton of attention. Find one that fits your personality the best.

Yea, I've been doing that the last few weeks. Actually found a border collie that I liked at a shelter. Was going to adopt but he was walking with a limp. They took him to a specialist and a vet to see what was wrong and they couldn't find anything. I really liked him but I don't feel like adopting a dog that isn't healthy and could have major problems down the road. I'm not rushing in to anything.
I want a border collie to run with and take to the dog park and to take to the day care so it can herd the children around
