This Is Not Your Independence Day
quote:
The 4th is not my Independence Day -- and if you're a Caucasian woman, it isn't yours either. Our "independence" didn't come for another 143 years, with the passage of The Woman's Suffrage Amendment in 1919. The 4th of July is also not Independence Day for people of color. It wasn't until the 15th Amendment was ratified in 1870 that all men had the right to vote regardless of race -- on paper, that is, not in practice. People of color were systematically, and all too successfully, disenfranchised for another century. July 4th of 1776 was certainly not a day of Independence or reverence for Native Americans. It wasn't until 1924 that Native Americans could unilaterally become citizens of the United States and have the voting rights to go with it.

She is stating facts more so than ranting.

I bet she's a riot at parties.

She is right. It is not her day. National counts Day is August 23rd.

The country that granted those rights gained celebrates Independence for July 4th, 1776.
She is ranting and it's her Independence day whether she likes it or not.

Someone needs to tell that broad that voting =\= indepedence. The day literally celebrates declaring independence from the British Empire not possessing voting rights.
The feminist movement could really improve its image if every statement made its members didn't sound like it was coming from a 14 year old "C" student.

at the Native American part. Those people were free long before we came here

Why can't people celebrate this country? For all it's faults and failures it is still the best place on this planet to live. Our poor are not poor comparative to the rest if the world. We are lucky. We are the fortunate ones. We live under the Stars and Stripes and for that I am forever thankful.
We are human. We've made mistakes. The rest of the world has made the same mistakes as well.
Look at any other country in the world and show me the same amount of social change in the same time frame (minus revolution/government collapse).
I feel sorry for people like this. They can't see the forrest for the trees. They may never be truly happy here.

This one is a lot less out there than the ones y'all usually cherry pick to post.
TD has a pretty warped view of what feminism is, sort of like the people who think Islam = Al Quaeda.

This is what happens when you let them out of the kitchen.

I bet she has hairy armpits and an even hairier bush

Instead of typing all those voting rights and trying to compare them to the country independence just think of the sandwich she could have made in that time..

I love these "I'm edgier than you" fricks.
STFU and go make me a fricking sandwich.

Thank you for writing this. It helps to articulate some of the feelings that I'm having at the moment. I feel really angry at my country right now, and I'm not really too pumped about participating in its birthday party until it can be a little nicer to me and my friends.
fricking shite. Acquire citizenship in Sweden then, bitch.

I'll drink a beer to that

If I had my way she still wouldn't have an Independence Day.
