Hotels would likely be full for those festivals no matter what weekend they fall on. They should move them to non holiday weekends so they can cash in on holiday travelers as well.

I disagree. 4th and Thanksgiving are not big NOLA tourist holidays. They need these events to keep it going.
It makes sense to have these events at that time...plus it adds to the reputation of NOLA as being diverse. You realize that these 2 dates are huge for a select demographic?
