Great thread. It's fitting that you would start it on the 50th anniversary of the day LBJ signed the CRA into law.

From LBJ:

For if we don’t move at all, then their allies will line up against us and there’ll be no way of stopping them, we’ll lose the filibuster and there’ll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. It’ll be Reconstruction all over again.”

Dang, I wish I could say I realized that when I started the thread, but I didn't. I was just waiting until I finished the book to comment on it. I finished it this afternoon.
