The Original Series was first, foremost and always about action and adventure. It is something that is lost on the more whiney members of it's fans. Sure they tackled issues of the day but kirk would always lose his shirt kicking someone's arse. McCoy would always save the day in his lab and spock would become human in a moment to save the day.
Star Trek at it's finest was never about complicated relations or talking a problem to death.
Have phaser will travel.
The new movies are a perfect blend of what the original series was about.

TNG had plenty of action and adventure, and they arguably did it better than TOS. Some of the better episodes had nothing to do with fighting the aliens of the week. The one where they were stuck in the time loop, all the Holodeck episodes, Q, etc. The Borg were an awesome villain, because they couldn't defeat them with brute strength, at least at first.
I guess it focused more on the adventure side, which I enjoyed. For that matter, my favorite of TOS movies is VI, and I'd say that by far that was the most adventurous of the movies.
