Chick was pretty fricking worthless other than the extremely close sharing or warmth it looked like they did on one of the early nights.

I think if he stuck with the bow drill instead of the fire saw, they would have had fire much sooner. Her constant whining certainly didn't help the cause.

I really don't have an issue with the pot choice. in some locals it will be very hard to find something to boil water in, so if you have some confidence in your fire making skills then it becomes more important. Also good for digging if necessary, and was great for carrying fire the two miles to the pick up zone. His bamboo-shoot turned GIANT frickING TORCH was starting to scare me.
honestly, all she needed to do was keep being positive and offer up her body for warmth and they would have coasted I think. He was in good shape and spirits at the in, relatively speaking of course. Not having to share food helped him a lot, but if she had a positive attitude I have the feeling they could have found more of those crabs together.
She was just a spoiled count, and probably deserved to die out there. Just saying.

I understand the pot but you're depending a lot on your partner's ability to make a fire. If he would have brought a fire starter, they'd have no knife. It just makes more sense for each couple of bring a fire starter and a machete/knife... unless you're going to Africa or the desert where you know water may be scarce and filthy. They could have boiled water in the bamboo-shoots like many others have managed to do.
