However, they were one of the first "indie" bands that were critically and commercially successful. In that sense, they are probably indirectly, if not directly, responsible for the surge of the indie movement. Which has become a huge facet of pop culture and music in general. It makes sense. From the Beatles to the Smiths, I can't think of many bands that influenced music as an art as well as a business as much as they did.
