Obesity is contributed to by many different things. Genetics likely plays a small role in it.

Family dynamics plays a role.

Diet plays a role in it.

And this can quickly spiral down with increasing weight making activity more difficult leading to decreased activity leading to more weight etc.

When people get to the truly obese stage it is very difficult for them to get out and very easy to relapse even after losing weight because at the end of the day weight loss is an absolute change of life.

If one looks at it as only diet or only exercise it will fail. It has to be a total change of lifestyle.

So genetics plays a small role in it, but at the end of the day, physics is physics.
