It's runs the Cyanogen system which I believe is very close to stock android (I've never had a pure Android phone). The only two issues I've had are as follows:
1. I had to download an aftermarket camera app (Camera MX) as the stock one didn't work; and
2. Sometimes a phone call is garbled. Turning the phone off and on fixes it.
Otherwise, cyanogen is much smoother and faster. Battery life is much better. I paired it with Nova Launcher, but Cyanogen's Launcher (Trebuchet) is good too.
It is a root of the phone, so there is some risk, but I believe it is minimal.
