I'm not going to explain this as well as others can. They don't "pick the groups after the 8 seeds like, say, the NCAA baseball tournament.

They seperation seeding and location (or, they don't want too many teams from the same confederation in one group) and pick from there for each group.

In a round robin scenario where the top two go through, of course there are going to be "elimination matches". But it's not easy to predict who will be in these matches. I mean, I wouldn't have picked Uruguay to be in this "elimination" match. Most people expected costa Rico

I get how the draw works with the different pots and geographical considerations, etc. I'm talking about any possible seeding 1-4 within the 8 groups after the draw.

I get that. But it seems like in most groups the second wave of games (games 3 and 4) are winner v winner and loser v loser. They are happening right away as opposed to the last wave of games. Just wondering if they try to "plan" this.
