I'm a dog person too. I volunteer at a no kill shelter from time to time and "foster" dogs from that shelter when storms are approaching, etc. Thus, I think my bona fides are established.
I am unsure why you think it is so "shitty" to return a dog to a shelter IF said dog did not work out with the family.
I am thankful that it doesn't happen often with the shelter I support. However, it is certainly not "rare". and, it is a reasonable thing to do.

A personality conflict with a dog? I suppose I have been very fortunate in my life to have had personality compatibility with all my dogs.
