A friend's dad has a litter and he is giving them away for free. Should I get one?? I'm not a very experienced dog owner(had several goldens growing up) but I do have a large fenced in back yard. This will be an outside dog primarily and it would be my first dog on my own. Any downsides to the breed that I need to be made aware of?? Unfortunately I don't have any pics.

No matter what anyone says, your fence cannot contain a heeler.

Great breed. Very active though. Smart and easy to train. Mine has been great with kids all of her life. She would dig areas to lay in under bushes in summer but never tried to dig out or leave the house. Heidi is 16 now and not sure how much longer we will have her but she is still active and affectionate. Get one.

If they are pure bred then free is a hell of a deal. A friend sell their pups for 50 I think.

I personally don't like them. I've been around a few that would bite.

in my experience, the heelers are damn smart dogs and are good with family...however, I have seen a lot of them get very territorial and aggressive towards strangers...
