I guess it's fun to try to twist it into some sort of slam on him, though.
Except for the fact that alcoholism is considered a disease....so Perry is suggesting homosexuality is some sort of disease that requires a cure.

Not knocking on you but I think it's a sickness, not a disease. Alcoholism is not transferable from one person to the other like the flu, common cold, etc.
As far as alcoholism being in one's genes, I disagree with that also. My dad was a drinking alcoholic for probably fifteen years. One day he decided enough was enough. He made up his mind that he had taken his last drink. For twenty years until his death he stuck to it.
You can't hope or wish a disease away.
I might add that none of his three sons have ever had a problem with alcohol.

Perry is right. I don't understand how this is debatable.
quote:
Genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of alcoholism. Whole-genome expression profiling has highlighted the importance of several genes that may contribute to alcohol abuse disorders. In addition, more recent findings have added yet another layer of complexity to the overall molecular mechanisms involved in a predisposition to alcoholism and addiction by demonstrating that processes related to genetic factors that do not manifest as DNA sequence changes (i.e., epigenetic processes) play a role.

Epigenetics -- how gene expression is regulated by temporary switches, called epi-marks -- appears to be a critical and overlooked factor contributing to the long-standing puzzle of why homosexuality occurs. According to the study, sex-specific epi-marks, which normally do not pass between generations and are thus "erased," can lead to homosexuality when they escape erasure and are transmitted from father to daughter or mother to son.

If he is going by current science, then yes, his comments are current with known studies.
BTW... Homosexuality was considered a disease.

quote:Number one, it hasn't always been considered a disease. Number two, a helluva lot of people today still don't consider addiction a disease, and I'm talking about people in the mental health community. Number three, no one knows for certain the cause of homosexuality. You don't. I don't. Rick Perry doesn't. His analogy is not as far out as you're trying to make it.
Except for the fact that alcoholism is considered a disease....
Having said all that. trying to compare homosexuality to any kind of problem a person wants to get rid of is definitely not a PC thing to say and will no doubt cause him great harm politically.

No, it's not.
