it originated (first documentation that ive seen) in the memoirs of lewis and clark. the explorers didnt understand the concept the indians had of giving a gift and then receiving one back of equal value.

for yall ignorant folk- remember in Dances With Wolves when the indian is wearing john dunbars hat, and then gives his vest for it?

Sounds like a pretty fair and civilized practice. We should indian give more often.
