Agreed.

"Tenure" at the high school level is asinine. Tenure started at major universities so experienced researchers could be free to research controversial topics without fear of reprisal, political pressure, etc. It has nothing to do with high school teaching.
Exactly. However, given the state of education in this country, I wouldn't have a problem with some sort of tenure-like status that can be given to teachers who are truly exemplary. In this case, it would be to protect excellent teachers from reprisal when they enforce discipline and impose harsh grading (or what students/parents perceive to be "harsh grading").
Excellent teachers who actually know what the hell they are doing shouldn't have to worry about administrative bullshite and possible sanctions stemming from punishing little johnny or giving a student an "F."
Then again, if all high school principals and other administrators were solid leaders and didn't cave into inane parental complaints, we probably wouldn't have to worry about this as much.

Absolutely not. If a school tried to fire and outstanding teacher, there would an uprising by parents who know what that teacher has done for their kids.
Also, I have seen teachers who have gotten lazy over time, once they got tenure. No reason to give them tenure of any kind. Not needed.
