Extremely challenging but lots of fun. I'm gonna be sore tomorrow. Any tips on how to get better? I feel like I forget everything as soon as the ball is inbounded
This upcoming football season will be my third year officiating HS football. I'm not sure what the mechanics of officiating basketball are or if there are any, but assuming there are mechanics involved you always want to look like you know what the hell you're doing. Sell the shite it out of your calls because it's a lot harder to question them if you that. I didn't realize how choreographed officiating really was and how much "acting" was involved. Learn you rules too. I know football has a shitload and it's almost impossible to know them all, but again mechanics can hide those missed calls sometimes.

This. You need to give the appearance that you are 100 percent confident and in complete control of the situation. At the same time, you want to be pretty invisible until you need to make a call. No one came to see you, so keep the light on the kids. As you get experience, you'll figure out more how to control the flow of the game, which is so important in kids sports. You have to know what calls to make and what calls to let slide.
Did you have a partner for the game? Every time you work with someome, ask them after to give you an honest evaluation. You will learn a lot that way. The vast majority of officials are quite eager to help out the new guys, since there are so few of them.
