Group G has the only group in which all 4 participants advanced from the group stage last World Cup. That in itself makes it the "toughest group" from an all participant stand-point.

With that said, I certainly would rather be in Group G than to be the 4th team in Group B or D(Australia/Costa Rica). I feel like facing Portugal and Ghana and scoring points is more achievable for the US than it would be if we were the 4th team in the other groups. From an all participant stand-point no one is thinking Australia or Costa Rica is going to steal points from the other 3 team(although it certainly plausible). Those teams will be focusing on the other 2 teams in the group, whereas I feel that everyone in Group G has to worry about every opponent within the group.

What has especially annoyed me is people are saying that Group G isn't the true group of death because “to be the group of death, you have to have four teams who would normally be favorites to advance." The consensus seems to be that we only have two.

Not only does the criteria not really fit any of the supposed 'Groups of Death' during my lifetime, but you could make a real argument that it does fit Group G this World Cup.

Every team in Group G made the Round of 16 in 2010 and has advanced in at least two of the last three tournaments. Also, each team has at least one quarterfinals appearance in that time frame, and if not for two handballs on the goal line, we may very well be looking at a group where every team has made the semifinals since 2002.

Group G is the group of death, and I honestly don't see a strong argument against that except for name recognition.
