Desertion, under all circumstances, requires intent to remain away permanently - or its not desertion. It could be AWOL or missing a movement - but it isn't desertion without intent to leave permanently.

I never said it was the same thing. I said he violated his first general order. Unless you believe he was abducted in the middle of the night.

Desertion is an action.
AWOL is the result of an action.

A deserter is one who deserts w/o intent of return.
There is not much question Bergdahl deserted.
