Don't know the formula, but depends on what you get. UberX is like a Honda Accord. It's cheap, comparable to a normal taxi. Uber black (original) is a black car service, it's cheaper than reserving a car but more expensive than a cab. Ditto for Uber SUV.

In SF, they had tons of options, UberTaxi (uses local taxi drivers), UberX, Uber black, Uber SUV, Uber XL (extra large SUV) and then UberLux (bentleys and whatnot).
