Before the tea party this is how Republicans campaigned and won races. By bragging about how much federal money and pork they were able to bring to their state/district.
They can't do that anymore. Now they have to run way to the right of their own record and pretend to be uncompromising hardline tea party conservatives in their campaigns, even though they aren't, and hope enough people fall for the B.S. It worked for McConnell.
The GOP Establishment loves big government, and wants to go back to those days where they could run on how much pork they were able to get.
