Does the Spanish monarchy have any real power these days?

Absolutely. They have far more approval than the democratic government. If the new King wanted to run the country like King's of old, the people would probably cheer for him in the streets. The monarchy was essential in getting rid of the Franco dictatorship.

It's pretty much the only reason Spain hasn't split into a bunch of different countries.
