I know this will come off as a snide remark by a lot of people but this is possibly the right answer.

Apple has shown zero interest in doing this. If it's that important a feature for you to have you either a. Buy an android device so you can have the feature or b. Buy an android device and refuse to give Apple more money when they're not listening to you.

Most likely, Apple will come up with another way. If the problem is actually information accessibility, there are better ways to get it to you. I think my way works better than home screen widgets.

ETA: honestly, I think that most iPhone users who ask for stuff like this have no idea why they want it. Most of them will say, "Android does it...why won't iOS". Are there things lacking in iOS that would be useful? Absolutely, but some of the things people ask for are probably things they would rarely use.

I actually had a Droid Incredible before my iPhone and honestly I just don't think there's a comparison. My droid's battery was trash within a year and it crashed constantly. I probably could have kept my 4S for three years instead of two (which my wife still has hers) and it run just fine. I think that in general is why I enjoy Apple products more. The design seems to be so much cleaner, the interface tighter, and while they do update their product line every year, their products still work without a hitch for years.

I did like the widget function my droid had, but the system is just too....I don't know...not sleek enough for me. I like the way this concept keeps the widgets within the same grid as current apps do, but you could potentially just change how many squares it takes up.
