birmingham b/c i have family there and it's closer to where i grew up... but i've enjoyed the little time i've spent in memphis.
memphis also has a pro sports team, which is cool... even though they're a disfunctional mess right now.

Memphis is a terrible place. B'ham is actually pretty nice on the whole - however its government is grossly irresponsible and rife with graft. See Jefferson County bankruptcy.

Birmingham has the Barons (minor league baseball) and there is a lot of support for them. They've just built a really nice ballpark in downtown Birmingham and have had good crowds on a consistent basis. I know minor league baseball is not the NBA, but there is an excitement and sense of support for the barons that makes Birmingham a great baseball town.
