I think this is why we disagree...I'm not even looking at his past offense and BABIP, I'm looking at historical defense, which is simply a lot better than what we have, and it won't diminish nearly as quickly as offense (I think Brett says as much in his article on Martin as well). I don't want to settle for a lower ceiling for what will eventually amount to a 4th rotation starter's difference in salary.

You may not be ready, but I sure as hell am for one of the top catchers in the MLB. And regarding Schwarber, don't pass up on a player because of the potential of one 3-5 years down the road. Logjams are a good thing.

No we agree on all that...except the offense part. I don't see that as sustainable.

well that was in a parenthetical because the chances of that happening are about 0. If, and that's a monstrous if, Martin was signed, still premier, and was playing so well you couldn't bench him, you move schwarbs to the OF, and platoon him doutmit style behind the plate.

5 years though...sheesh. Getting greedy.

And i'll happily admit that i'm terrified of this due to mcccann, and that might not be fair, martin stays in the same division unlike mccann, it's chicago, not NY, and mccann could certainly turn it around and even started doing so this year. But I thought that deal was stupid then, so i think matching it now for martin is also stupid. But maybe it doesn't get that high. Remember, my problem is with the time/value, not the players talents (albeit i don't think this year is what you can expect form martin going forward).
