It's not really a matter if if your truck can pull it or not. It's a matter of can your truck pull it safely down the road and be able to stop in a reasonable distance or a very short distance if the opportunity arises. Also 5th wheels usually have a different plug for brake lights than most half ton trucks are equipped with. Trailer brakes is a MUST. No matter how far you're going.

My Chevy 1/2 ton has the proper plug, but the placement sucks, so I use an extension. Works great. And yes, with the right brake settings, the trailer stops itself, and helps the truck a tremendous deal. Hell, I may stop better with it on there than without.
