Obama was elected because of the historical and cultural change it would signify. Having a black president is certainly a sign of progress, but no one questioned his governing capabilities, and they were not really scrutinized during the campaigns. Obama surely knows how to play up what he represents on the outside, but he really is incompetent, aloof, and lacking of leadership abilities.
Don't blame him, though. Blame the people who elected him. People who think the presidency should be held by someone who represents "cultural change" and "the breaking of barriers", rather than someone who has leadership abilities.
Sadly, the same crap will be played in 2016. Emotional voters will turn out for Hillary because they want a woman as president. Her ability to lead (which is mediocre at best) will take a back seat to the significance of a woman presidency.

"It's like, we had a black President, ya know? And it would be, like, awesome to then have to have like, a woman President, ya know, to show we are, like, moving forward and ya know, showing our, like, diversity because our diversity, like, makes us awesome, ya know?"

Asked why "some people" consider him to be "aloof", Obama said he has told Republicans that if they wanted him to come over and wash their car or walk their dog, he's game for it if it means things are actually getting done for the American people.
The word jumped off the page at me because I remembered him giving that answer and exactly WHEN the American public first heard him say it.
The timing of the "WHEN" to which I refer, in terms of him being perceived as aloof, is absolutely mind-blowing
