He comes out of nowhere and becomes just a great sidekick character. More to come on him.

He really does.
I think one of Sanderson's biggest strengths is his ability to create support characters. Ham and Sazed and Clubs and OreSeur are the ones who really make the stories. Hell even Reen or whatever her brother's name is feels like a real part of the story.
To be honest, I'm not in love with either Vin or Elend.
