To add to my edited post above, are we (youth coaches) failing at something when they are kids? I know it seems that few kids long toss much anymore, but I still have my kids do it. Is there a mechanical flaw causing this? Is it overuse? I'm not one of these coaches that just let kids throw 100 pitches in a game. I'd never allow that. Just curious.

“It’s because pitchers simply don’t throw as much as we did,” Ryan replied. “That’s the real issue here. When I pitched, we pitched every fourth day and guys would pitch 300 innings and it wasn’t considered a big deal. If you don’t get on the mound and develop stamina, you’re risking injury. This whole thing with the 100-pitch count limit — I have a real problem with that. Pitchers are all different and when you put standard limitations on them, you’re not utilizing their talent.”

Ryan's theory has support from Tommy John. The namesake of the elbow ligament transplant surgery many star pitchers are getting, John believed that reducing today's pitching workload isn't doing any current hurlers any favors and is critical of those who still believe it.

I am guessing year round baseball. Used to be you had the season and you played other sports the rest of the year. Allowed the body to grow all around by mixing up muscle memory.

In the old days you did football in the fall, boxing in the winter, and swam in the spring or some type of rotation like that. With horses you can over train them and they will sulk and spit the bit.
