Host was perhaps the wrong word but he is definitely the main voice of the show. I don't know the ratings but I would think that they compare quite favorably to other 10 O'clock week day shows.

i would think that has to do with ESPN's general overall reach. But didn't your OP say it was one of ESPN's best known shows? See how the ratings compare to the Sportscenter that runs in the same time slot.

Finally, if we take all of your assertions at face value without anything to back them up, the answer is simply this--Skip is nothing more than a wrestling heel. People find villains interesting. Many hate his character, some dumb people think his informative and smart, others (like me) hate that he contributes to the shitfest on ESPN that brings the level of sports discourse down to such a pathetic level of lowest-common-denominator pot-stirring.

Take your pick. Doesn't mean people love him from behind a closet door.
