Ultimately gay athletes will get their due just like African Americans. It will just take some time. It's an issue, that while it should be encouraged subtly, it should not be forced. People think these team owners and GM's are vicious racists who can't fathom the thought of a gay guy on their team. This is not true. These teams have millions upon millions tied up as an investment in their rosters. You can't blame them for being cautious about adding a mediocre player with limited upside to their roster who has the chance (albeit a small chance) of harming the locker room chemistry. Ultimately these teams want to win. And once a gay guy with the talent to help them do that at the NFL level comes along, he'll be accepted.

He wouldn't even have been Co-Defensive player of the year without coming out.

Fix your quote here. SEC Awards announced December 11, 2013.

Michael Sam comes out February 9, 2014.

The rest of your post was good, though. I generally agree.

I don't think they even care if a player is gay. It's very likely that every team in the league has had at least one gay player, and his orientation was known to his teammates.

With Michael Sam, teams are worried about the media circus. The one thing every coach wants to avoid is distractions. (The Jets or Cowboys would be the exceptions to that rule.) If he were an elite talent, the media circus would be worth it. If he's a tweener who can't be an every down player, teams will be more cautious.

If it came out tomorrow that Gisele is a cover for Tom Brady's gayness, there are about 25 teams that would still trade for him.
