One time I was in North Arkansas and maybe 16 years old. I saw a chipmunk kind of scurrying along through the rocks, cedars and brush. I walked over to get a closer look. When I stopped I see a flattened out snake literally between my feet similar to the one you posted. When he saw that I saw him, he curled up upside down playing dead much like the second picture. That snake was after the chipmunk, and he thought I was after him.

At the time I was unfamiliar with them. It scared the shite out of me and I took off running the other way high stepping like Deion Sanders. His defense worked.

Similar situation... I was cutting trails when I dropped my machete to get some Levi Garrett. When I reached down to get the machete I saw the rattlesnake coiled right between my gotdamn feet. Deion Sanders... good description.
